Getting the most out of your Swimmers

As I’m sure you are already aware, all individuals are different. Whether you are a coach or a parent, all swimmers’ behaviors are unalike. They are motivated differently, work differently, and enjoy being praised differently. This can make coaching a team very difficult to appease everyone. Not only do cultural and biological differences impact behavior, but gender plays a role also. Here’s how –

Females:
-          It’s a known fact that females are generally more emotional than men. Coaches and parents can use this to their advantage! Females like to be close with teammates and to feel united as a team. Use this approach by encouraging team bonding activities to bring the team closer.
-          Going along with feeling united, women love socializing. Believe it or not, allowing them to communicate can give them a sense of pleasure which can increase passion for the sport.
-          It’s important to keep in mind that creating a ‘competition’ environment amongst woman can do more harm than good. Since women tend to be more emotional, they can take losing harshly. In some cases, this could even damper the team unity as a whole.

Males:
-          Males love competition, they thrive off of it. Once you determine there will be a winner and a loser, they’ll do their absolute best to make sure they are #1. Winning gives males the ULTIMATE confidence boost. Be sure to remind them of their bragging rights if they win!
-          Because of the male’s competitive personality trait, they tend to think they are the best, the smartest, etc. They only have to do one thing, PROVE IT. Give them a lot of opportunity for them to show you who’s ‘best.’

If you’re looking to really looking to incorporate competition amongst your team, check out The Lifeguard Store’s Ribbons & Medals for added praise!

10 Things to Bring to Swim Meets

1.       Suit
Of course you can’t go to a swim meet without your suit! This should be one of the first things you throw into your bag so there isn’t a chance you’ll forget it!

2.       Goggles
Goggles are a very important item that all swimmers should have with them. If you pack the same bag as you do for swim practice, you should already be set! It's a good idea to have a spare in-case yours are misplaced, break, or just giving you trouble!

3.       Swim Cap
Alike goggles, these can normally be found in every swimmer’s equipment bag! Swim Caps are typically used for both training and racing, helping you reduce any drag in the pool.

4.       Towel(s)
Once you hop out of the pool, chances are you are going to want to dry off. Depending on the swim meet, you may want to bring along more than one towel, especially once the day is over and you are ready to head home.

5.       Parka
Parkas are a great way to stay warm in-between heats. Parkas have sleeves and hoods that allow you to stay fully covered and warm, but mobile.  Our RISE Aquatics Team Parka offers a poly fleece liner to keep you warm, and a water resistance outer shell to keep you dry!

6.       Team Meet Mat
Having a Team Meet Mat is a MUST for breaks in between heats. They are ultra-portable, comfortable, and perfect for sharing. The easy-to-clean waterproof backing is such a great feature for swim meets!

7.       Drinks and Snacks
Swim meets usually take up quite a bit of the day so it’s imperative to stay fueled up! For some great ideas what you can pack with you check out these great ideas!

8.       Dry Change of Clothes
Once the swim meet is done, you will be headed home and you won’t want to be in your wet suit any longer. Use the wet pocket in the RISE Aquatics Pro Team Backpack for your wet suit, allowing your other items to remain dry.

9.       Sharpie and Highlighter for Heat Sheet
You should always throw in a couple pens, sharpies, and/or highlighters in your bag for writing times on your heat sheet. You can also highlight certain times for convenience.

10.   Toiletries
After getting out of the pool, your next step is to be hoping into the shower to rinse off. Be sure to pack your shampoo, body wash, and swim spray so you are prepared.

What other items do you bring to your swim meets?

Daily Chores Add Up!

With the New Year here, many people are trying to make healthier choices to better themselves. One of the many goals people have is to lose weight or just ‘move more’ in general. Luckily, many of our daily tasks aid in our daily caloric expenditure. While it may not seem like your burning any calories since you’re not out of breath or sweating uncontrollably, you are already moving toward good health.

Sure- cleaning the house may not be the most enjoyable task after a long day of work, but you can burn upwards of 150 calories every hour! Next time you’re cleaning your house and you’re lugging that vacuum around or bending and twisting to dust those family trinkets, know you’re doing something healthy for yourself too! Don't be shy, add a couple extra squats for good measure!

You know that dreadful chore of grocery shopping? You’re burning calories! Walking around the store, whether it’s for groceries or new clothes, can burn hundreds of calories depending on the length of time. Just imagine if you are clothes shopping and trying on different shirts, pants, or shoes! When roaming the shops, don’t forget to take the stairs instead of the escalader or elevator!

We know it’s easier to go to a car wash to get your car cleaned, but have you thought about doing it yourself? Choosing to wash your car by hand will not only save you money, but will also keep the pounds off! That’s a win-win in my book!

If you’ve been putting off those tedious daily chores, you’re missing out on a great caloric burn! Although cardio and weight training paired with good diet is the key to living a healthy lifestyle, these activities can act as a bonus workout! Other tasks like washing dishes, moving furniture, and scrubbing the tub all burn calories too!

Choosing the Best Tech Suit

Are you looking to step up your game in the water? If so, you NEED to check out what a tech suit can do for you! These suits are designed to help you swim faster to beat the competition. Here’s how:

Fabric
Tech suits are typically made with a combination of polyester, nylon, spandex, and LYCRA. These allow the suit to easily conform to your body. Some suits are even made out of fabric that is water repellant. Yes, water repellant! This may seem too good to be true, but it’s not. These fabrics basically scare the water away, which works in your favor, reducing any drag.

Seams
When thinking about tech suits, imagine it being another layer of skin. It needs to conform to the body, so you are able to trudge through the water as fast and as effortlessly as possible. Seams can get in the way of that! Tech Suit-makers use flat stitching which keeps the seams and suit close to the body which again, helps reduce water resistance.

Compression
The compression that tech suits offer is a huge advantage! As you may infer by the name, compression fabrics compress everything together – which can reduce drag. Compression can also increase circulation, aid blood flow, and help your alignment. Compression can be a huge factor for women, not so much for men due to their smaller suits.

Price
Have you heard of the phrase, “you get what you pay for?” This also works for Tech Suits. Costing a significant amount more than regular suits, these can cost in the upward range of $500. Luckily, The Lifeguard Store has all the latest Tech Suits for less! For women, we have suits like the TYR Tracer Light and the Arena Carbon Pro. Men can choose from suits like Speedo Fastskin or the TYR Fusion Male Jammer.

Don’t put off buying a Tech Suit any longer!
